Recruiting a Grateful Nation
On this the 4th day of July
As we watch our flag go by
We honor the symbol we salute
But what about the human recruit?
For they’re the ones who fight for us
Keeping liberty a right for us
Sent to places we’re not wanted
Oft returning hurt and haunted
After they have answered the call
Some do not come back at all
Each one pays such a high price
In our stead, all sacrifice
What it’s like, we haven’t a clue
But not just them, their loved ones too
Each service has its job to do
They do it all for me and you.
For all the trouble that they’ve known
Welcome them and help them home
Not with just some formal parade
Let’s give them love, aides, tools and trades
So they can honestly return
And enjoy what they’ve rightly earned
Though there are many in these troops
They are a special, unique group
Men and women, straight and gay
Serve across the world every day
They may be young, they may be old
But each with burdens oft untold
If you’re religious, say your prayers
They should know that someone cares
If you aren’t, just give somehow
Not soon, not someday, DO IT NOW
