Watermelon Ode
My inspiration: Yuri, my grandson, was asked why he likes watermelon so much. After thinking a bit, he said: “I like the way it feels in my mouth.”* (January 06, 2017)
*Watermelon: I like out how it feels in my mouth
Because watermelon is a unique fruit,
I write this rhyme as a special toot.
In my mouth it has a particular feel.
It almost makes my tastebuds squeal:
Cool and wet, refreshes a summer day;
Better than any other fruit can say.
If outside, you can play a game.
Spitting seeds is its name.
But inside, they can be a pain;
Seedless watermelon is a gain.
Slice it in half but keep it whole;
Scooped out it serves as a bowl.
Even it’s dark green or striped skin
Says there’s something special within.
It’s fleshy color runs from red to pink
But I prefer the deepest color, I think.
The white part can be made into pickles.
That vinegary taste sort of tickles.
No matter its shape, oblong or round,
Thump it to hear its hollow sound.
Its size makes it champion of the world.
Go ahead, taste it! Give your mouth a whirl.
